Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS)

The Muslim World After September 11: Agenda for Change

October 25-27, 2002
American University
Washington, DC

Call for Papers

Muslim scholars and students of Islam have been seriously involved in de-constructing an image of Muslims and Islam that has presented an obstacle towards the future transformation of Muslim communities all over the globe. The events of September 11th, while exposing volatile relations between the West and the Muslim World, and thereby calling for a reassessment of these relations, made it even more imperative that the efforts towards building an agenda for change be resumed with greater vigor.

The 31st Annual Conference of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS), which will be held at American University in Washington DC from Oct 25-27, 2002, offers an excellent forum to address possibilities for the future. Students of Islam and the Muslim world working towards a better understanding of the factors that led to the events of September 11th are encouraged to participate. Equally as important is the participation of those individuals who are working on defining various challenges facing the Muslim world and providing possible answers to these challenges.
